Children - Innocent Catalysts

Last night we went out to have dinner at our favorite loud, family friendly restaurant. Our toddler was smiling and waving at an older man (this is a common occurrence). She then reminded us, "Pray to God? Pray to God?" Parenthood often reveals to us the important things we forget to do; all of the flaws we have that children shine their innocent little lights on. We continued on with our meal, when the wife of the man came over and began chatting with me. Our 4 month old began fussing, so I was trying to carry on a polite introduction, while bouncing and trying to hold a pacifier in the little one's mouth. Multitasking! The lady told me that she had two children 13 months apart many years ago. She and her husband have been married 63 years as of next week. One thing lead to another, and the woman shared with me and my husband that she was a WWII war victim. She had been held in a Japanese internment camp. Her story was heart wrenching. She was on the front page of the newspaper in November. She said that Tom Hanks' publicist has contacted her, and they are interested in making a film of her life. I sure hope they do. The couple ended up trading information with us, and we plan on keeping in touch with them. Moments like those make me sit in awe of life. Sitting in a crowded restaurant, it's amazing to think of how many powerful stories are sitting around us. Stories of survivors, nurturers, life-long partnerships, wisdom, character, and strength. Our little family felt very fortunate to have been able to meet such a special couple. Thanks goes to our little toddler for waving at a kind old man. She always attracts new people and experiences to us.
